Move forward with your recovery.
STEP is an outpatient clinic located in Carrboro, North Carolina that helps people and families dealing with serious mental illness make strides towards health and recovery.
Our team of mental health professionals and graduate students from UNC-Chapel Hill―psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, clinical social workers, psychologists, nurses, and others―specialize in the treatment of schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, depression, and other serious mental illnesses with psychotic symptoms.
Using research-based, best-practice clinical skills, we assist our clients with their recovery process. We provide illness education and medication management, and help our clients come up with personal coping and relapse prevention strategies.

Despite the meaning of the Greek words from which the name was derived that translate as "split mind," schizophrenia is not a case of multiple personalities (dissociative identify disorder), nor is it the state of thinking two opposite things at once. The key features of the illness were originally thought to be the split from reality people experience when they believe their delusions or perceive hallucinations.
